A Long Petal of the Sea

What is this book about:

This book is about a young doctor, Victor Dalmau and a pianist named Roser, who are forced to flee their war-ravaged home, as a result of the Spanish Civil War. Together they board a ship to Chile where they discover new friendships and driven by their passion for their respective work, re-build a life of true purpose. Over four generations they experience loss, success and tragedies and once again find themselves caught between the crossfire of political forces that threatens to uproot their life once again.

Why we recommend it:

The message interwoven throughout this story is that the landscape of a person’s life is ever changing and nothing in life is constant. The characters in the book are repeatedly faced with situations that are beyond their control: they are forced to leave their home, their families, lose loved ones and constantly encounter situations which force them to reinvent themselves over and over. However, through it all, the hard work, dignity, resilience and grit displayed by the characters makes it an incredible and inspiring read.
